Blog > Commercial Rooftop versus Utility-Scale Solar: What’s The Difference?
Dec 12, 2025 by VCT Group
Solar energy is growing rapidly across Canada, driving innovation in how we generate and use electricity. Since 2019, solar energy capacity in Canada has grown by 92%. However, not all solar projects are built the same. The two most common solar systems are commercial rooftop solar and utility-scale solar – each serve a unique purpose within the decarbonization landscape. Below you’ll find out how they differ, and how to determine which is best for your business.
Commercial rooftop solar refers to solar power systems installed on the roofs of commercial, industrial, or institutional buildings. These systems generate electricity directly for on-site use, offsetting grid consumption, and helping businesses take control of their energy costs.
In many ways, commercial rooftop systems turn existing infrastructure into a renewable energy asset. Rather than leaving roof space idle, panels convert sunlight into usable electricity that powers day-to-day operations.
System sizes typically range from 50 kW to over 1 MW, depending on the available space, roof condition, and energy needs. You’ll often find them on the rooftops of warehouses, schools, offices, and manufacturing plants.
Utility-scale solar are the solar systems you may see often called “solar farms”. These ground-mounted systems are designed to feed electricity directly into the power grid, providing clean energy to utilities, municipalities, or entire regions.
They essentially function as large solar power plants. Project capacities generally start around 1 megawatt (MW) and can reach several hundred megawatts, depending on land availability, grid access, and regional energy demand.
Deciding between commercial rooftop and utility-scale solar depends on your goals, available space, and investment strategy. Here at VCT Group, we’re experts in helping align your solar project to your goals and expectations. We’re happy to discuss your goals and current availability and help you learn more about what solar strategy works best for you.
At VCT Group, we’ve delivered solar projects across the spectrum – from high-performance rooftop systems for schools to large projects that feed the grid directly, and even solar carports for parking lots.
Whether you’re exploring solar for your business or developing a larger commercial or utility project, VCT Group can help you design, build, and maintain the right solution for your needs.
